Maccaferri Guitar Project 3

An aim for the third Maccaferri was to try another variation for creating a pliage, - this time heat bending the soundboard to create an arch, but without scoring any line across the inside.
The soundboard was planed down to 2.4mm thickness for bending and sanded down to 2.mm finished thickness.
This resulted in a more gentle bend (8mm high) supporting the bridge, not  a sharp pleat or fold.

The internal bracing parallel to the bridge was constructed to the minimum height specified in F. Charle's plan (17mm) and arched 8mm.

The neck has a dovetail joint to the body..
The neck angle is 4 degrees and the bridge height is 21mm.

The final result is a very responsive sound, loud, clear and well balanced from bass to treble.
It is much more resonant than the previous Maccaferri Projects and suggests that there is an important balance between:

  • The thickness / stiffness of the soundboard.

  • The strength of internal bracing.

  • The neck angle's effect on string pressure.
